It's my third August sojourning to Cactus Land, and for the first time, no tears! Instead of a 12-hour drive and temporary move into the tundra, I took a quick flight and will be gone again in a few days. What a difference two years makes!
Tomorrow starts year three of my PhD program. Thanks to a very supportive department, I'm able to homebase in Sacramento, flying to Phoenix on a weekly basis. I've said that out loud enough that it's clear conceptually. Now I just have to figure out how to make it work in real life.
For instance, flying means no ground transportation, so today I learned to use the lightrail and will scout out bicycles. Homebasing in Sacramento means no "vacation home" apartment, so I'm crashing with a friend. Not being around campus everyday means cramming everything into one day of the week and hoping I don't irritate people too much. Oh, and I haven't even mentioned the fun school bits. Oi!
Lots of balls in the air. Wish me luck juggling!

I am a big fan of the light rail. I take it every day to work. Yay for homebasing in Sac!!!!
ReplyDeleteShawna, I just discovered your blog while searching Google for mindfulness. Having gone through comps and the PhD process, I say hurrah, what a grueling and fulfilling process! Good luck and ignore the moments when you wonder "Should I just start a bakery/dog walking service/different career instead?" :) I am catching up on your blog and taking much from it. I'm exploring diet/mindfulness/how to de-stress against all odds and every bit of guidance and inspiration helps.
ReplyDeleteJehara- I'm so excited! I also can't believe that I *just* figured out the lightrail. How I wish it would have connected to Mesa when I lived out there.
ReplyDeleteCranky- Thank you for the kind words and wishes!
